Does Choosing the Wrong Starter Lock You in Pokemon FireRed?
No. No starter choice in Pokémon FireRed will prevent you from finishing the game.
You cannot change your starter unless you restart the game. You also cannot obtain the other two starters in the same save file without trading from another game. However, this decision does not block any Gym, story event, or required part of the game. The same rules apply in Pokemon LeafGreen.
Why This Choice Feels Risky
At the beginning, you must choose between three starter Pokémon. This is one of the earliest one-time decisions in Pokemon FireRed that cannot be changed during the playthrough.
Because this choice cannot be reversed, some players worry that selecting the wrong starter might make the game impossible to finish.
The game itself does not clearly explain that all three starters allow the story to progress normally.
The real concern is not just difficulty, but the fear of having made a choice that cannot be fixed.
What Actually Happens
- No starter makes any Gym impossible to beat.
- No part of the story is locked because of your starter.
- You are never forced to restart just because you chose the “wrong” one.
The difference mostly affects how the early game feels.
Later in the game, a similar permanent choice appears in Mt. Moon when selecting between the Helix Fossil and the Dome Fossil.

What This Does NOT Affect
Choosing a starter does not:
- Lock any Gym
- Block story progression
- Prevent Elite Four completion
- Require restarting the game
All three starters allow the game to be completed normally.
In Short
Starter choice in Pokémon FireRed cannot be changed.
However, no starter choice prevents you from completing the game.
